Keeping your rain water tank clean & healthy
Reduce algae growth by stopping any direct sunlight from entering the water tank.
The first rain water run off should be diverted away from the tank, this will help eliminate a lot of rain water tank problems. A first flush diverter will remove most sediment, fallout from spraying, algae blooms, stale water caused by water sitting in gutters and low down pipes. This also reduces the risk of bacterial contamination from birds, frog, possums etc making the rain water safer and healthier.
If your down pipes go under ground before going up the side of the water tank, there is a good chance that your pipes are holding water, which can make the rain water go stale and allow bacteria growth. This will also happen if your down pipes hold water and are facing the West with direct sunlight on them, as the water will get warm. If you can drain this water away by undoing the inspection cap or by putting a drain line in at the lowest point of the under ground pipes.
If you have not got a first flush diverter fitted just contact us and we will email you a free copy of a cheap to make diverter system that you can make yourself that works great.
Testing for sediment or tannins
Test to see if your water has sediment or tannins.
Simply fill a clear glass with water and let it stand for 24hrs.
If the water is clear and you have sediment at the bottom then this can be filtered out.
If the water is still coloured than you have tannins.
Tannins is caused by leaves or clay etc. which will stain the water.
Tannins will make the water have a slight yellowish or white colour even after it has been filtered.
Most tannins do not cause any health related problems in the water.
