IMPORTANT: Sterilise Housing, filter cartridge and equipment before use. Use a food grade Liquid No-Rinse Sanitiser or similar.
Keg filtering with Co2
- Empty the fermenter into a keg as normal (by placing a piece of tubing onto your fermenter tap and into the bottom of your keg).
- Once all the beer is transferred – seal the keg.
- Connect the tubing from the out post on the full keg to the inlet of the filter.
- Connect the tubing from the outlet of the filter to the empty keg or container ensuring the tubing is as close to the bottom as possible.
- Hook up the Co2 gas to the Co2 post on the full keg and set your regulator to a maximum of 70kpa or 10 psi.
- Press and hold the air purge button on top down and turn the filter outlet side tap across and off – once all air is removed from filter and beer is flowing out the top – turn outlet tap on and release the purge button on the filter.
- Filtering at this slow rate will remove the highest amount of sediment.
- Once all beer has run through the filter, turn off Co2.
If you have a problem with oxidisation while filtering, simply turn the filter housing upside down and any air trapped in the housing will go to the top. You can drill a ½” hole in a piece of wood for the purge button to go through enabling the housing to stand inverted.
Cleaning and storing of beer filter
Simply use a garden hose on a light spray to clean, then sterilize the housing and filter cartridge before use.
- Open filter housing and remove cartridge
- Hose out sump
- Lightly hose off outside surface of cartridge by moving the hose up and down until clean
- Replace filter cartridge back into sump and hold down while running the hose in the top of the cartridge – this will back-flush cartridge forcing particles out of the pleats
- Sterilize all equipment including filter cartridge
- Shake the pleated filter to remove excess water then drain for a few minutes before placing into a clean plastic bag
- Remove most of the air from the bag, then seal and put in the freezer until next brew – this will stop potential bacteria and/or mould growth.
Before re-using filter system, sterilize all equipment with the sanitiser including the housing and filter cartridge.
- Thaw pleated filter cartridge completely
- Shake to remove excess water before placing in the sump
- Recommend lubricating end-caps of cartridge with food grade silicon grease to reduce twisting effect when housing tightened
- Never tighten housing when cartridge is totally dry or frozen – or damage will occur and shorten life of cartridge significantly.
Pleated filter cartridges are made to crush down to seal inside the housing, never tighten housing on a totally dry cartridge.
