Setting up your Ultimate Carbon Gravity Filter
The elbow fittings have tapered threads – DO NOT TIGHTEN – tightening will crack the housing rendering the filter inoperable – should you still have any leakage, simply apply a little more thread tape.
Set up the system in place before you go to use for the first time with your collecting container on the floor.
The top of the filter has the small ¼” white elbow fitting & the bottom has the clear tubing attached to a
black elbow.
Position the filter housing using the mounting clip so the filters bottom black elbow is higher
than your collecting container.
When screwing the mounting clip on don’t over tighten the screw, allowing for the clip to be able to turn slightly, this is so the filter can be turn upside down to drain the last spirit out.
The top supply container should be a minimum of 25mm above the top of the filter. Cut the clear 12.5mm ID tubing to the required length and fit onto the tap on the supply container.
Install the short end of the ¼” tubing with the small flow control tap into the quick connect white elbow fitting on top of the filter simply by pushing the ¼” tubing in until it stops then pulling outwards slightly to lock in.
Once the flow control line is in place you can cut the tubing to length to go into your container on the floor.
You can now remove the flow control line from the top white elbow fitting.
Simply push the ¼” tubing back into the elbow fitting then hold the small locking collar back towards the elbow fitting, while holding the collar back now pull the tubing out
of the fitting.
Refilling Carbon
Filter will take approximately 250g of GAC to fill.
Unscrew the top cap & remove the top filter screen, plastic grill & foam packing pad.
With the bottom screen and then the bottom grill in place fill the filter with carbon to the bottom of the cap thread, gently tap the side to settle the carbon and refill to bottom of the thread. Replace the foam-packing pad then the plastic grill and then the top filter screen, screw top cap back on.
Before using – flush carbon fines from filter.
Screw the 1” tap adaptor with the ¼” tubing onto a tap, push the ¼” tubing into the elbow fitting on the top of the filter and turn the water on for 30 seconds, water will flow out of the 12.5mm clear tubing down the
drain.
Turn off tap and then repeat this process two more times to totally flush carbon.
If you have a suitable water container you can now also filter the drinking water needed to make your spirits and keep some for diluting down later, as the carbon will remove chemicals and bad taste & odours from the water.
Once you have finished collecting filtered water push the clear tubing over the white elbow fitting
on top to seal system then store the filter in a dark cool place until you are ready to filter your spirits.
Filtering spirits
If you have stored your filter for a few days after collecting filtered water flush a few litres of water through again before filtering spirits.
To remove the flushing adaptor from the top elbow fitting push the ¼” tubing back into the elbow fitting then hold the small locking collar back towards the elbow fitting, while holding the collar back now pull the tubing out of the fitting.
Connect the flow control line back onto the filter.
Note: Alcohol should be dilute to around 50%/V before filtering as this will help with filtering, after filtering you can then adjust the percentage to your required rate – recommended 40%
With the filter in position and the 12.5mm tubing connected to the top container and the flow control line in the bottom-collecting container.
Turn the flow control tap to fully open (so the arrow is running in-line with the tubing, when the arrow is across, the tap is totally off)
Slightly open the top containers lid to allow air to replace the unfiltered spirit.
Then turn the tap on the top container open, with the spirits now starting to flow into the filter the air in the carbon is being forced out the top of the filter.
When filtered spirit is starting to go into the collecting container adjust the small flow control tap so the spirit entering the collection container is at a slow drip pace.
Slow filtering will allow the longest contact time in the carbon filter which results in the highest remove rate of contaminates from the spirits.
Once the top container is empty and the filter has stopped running, remove the 12.5mm tubing from your
top container and rotate the filter upside down to allow the remaining spirit to be removed from the filter.
Clean up
Disassemble filter and discard used carbon, flush all components then soak in warm / hot water and clean.
Fill the filter housing up with warm water and hold up to allow the lines to be flushed with the flow control
fully opened.
Once cleaned allow all the components to totally dry before storing.
Included is a spare piece of 3mm felt filter screen simply cut to size and replace as required.
