Description

Gravity Home Brew beer filter to remove spent yeast and haze from your beer. Creates a much clearer beer without impacting taste.

Includes two high-quality transparent 10″ housings on white bracket. 3/4″ Bsp ports which can be easily adapted to suit a wide range of fittings and an air bleed button on top. Several filter combinations of filters available including high-quality American-made pleated washable filters.

Option connection kit is available. It includes two metres of 12.5mm ID clear food grade tubing and screw in 13mm barbed hose fittings. Shut off tap on the outlet side to help remove air from the filter and control flow if bottling.

The 12.5mm ID tubing in the optional connection kit will push onto a standard fermenter tap.

Ideal for removing sediment & haze from your home brew without affecting the beer taste and will still allow beer to work in the bottle. Gravity filter beer from your fermenter into an empty keg or into bottles.

USA made quality pleated washable 10″ x 2.5″ filter cartridge, these filters can be washed out and reused many times before replacing. High quality caged filters are also available at even finer micron ratings.

Instructions on how to use and cleaning are included.

Choosing a Micron Rating

The. ideal micron rating will vary based upon several factors including the type of beer you are making, the amount of yeast it contains, the protein level in the wort, water quality and more.

Commercial breweries often use very fine filtration to improve shelf life, but this is usually not necessary for home brewers.  For most homebrewers a 1-micron filter achieves a clear, clean beer. However, going finer can help you improve the appearance of your beer. As always with home brewing — some experimentation is required.

In general terms:

  • 0.35 micron Nominal
High quality-USA made Harmsco filter.  Removes most yeast from the beer. (up to 90% at 0.4 micron particle size & 10% at 1.2 micron)
Filtering will be slower. Usually the finest filter required by home brewers unless they are seeking commercial level clarity (when a switch to Absolute filters is typically required)
  • 1 Micron Nominal 1025PW1Nom
High quality-USA made Harmsco filter. Removes more than a standard 1 micron filter. Will still allow some yeast through for the beer to work. (up to 90% at 1 micron &  10% at 2.5 micron)
  • 1 Micron
Most yeast particles are removed. Achieves a good balance of  clarity and flavor retention.
  • 5 Micron
Usually the coarsest filter recommended for removing yeast and haze-causing agents. Works well on beers which don’t have much haze present
  • 20 Micron
Removes large clumps of sediment particles, sometimes used as a first stage to make the finer second stage more effective.

Nominal vs Absolute Rated Filters

Nominal filters remove the majority of particles larger than their micron rating. The exact reduction level will vary based on the quality of the filter, but it is typically in the 80-95% range.

This means a 1 micron nominal filter will remove 80-95% of particles larger than 1 micron. The Harmsco filters listed above will remove more than the Pentek filters.

Absolute filters have been tested to achieve 99.99% reduction at their specified micron rating. That makes them much finer than a nominal filter.  For example, it is common for a 10 micron absolute filter to achieve better reduction rates than a 3 micron nominal filter.

Absolute rated filters are available in the Beer Filter Cartridge section.  Caution should be taken if using absolute filters, as they made pre-filtration to avoid them clogging too quickly. If filtration is too fine, it may also begin to impact flavour.
