Description
The High Performance Filtration HPF-BT-RO is a 3-Stage Reverse Osmosis System designed to produce ultra-pure water ideal for use in spirit making and beer making.
This compact unit strips a wide range of contaminants from the water supply, including bad taste/odour, sediment, chlorine, chloramines, herbicides, pesticides and more. It produces extremely pure water that can be used to improve your beer and spirit making process.
It consists of 3 filtration stages:
Stage 1: Sediment filtration
Reduces particulate contaminants including sand, rust, dirt, metal particles, and microplastics.
Stage 2: Carbon filtration
Reduces chlorine, chemicals and bad taste/odour.
Stage 3: Reverse Osmosis Membrane
A membrane comprised of many layers of semi-permable sheets to reduce ultra-fine contaminants. Some of the contaminants it reduces include heavy metals, dissolved salts and minerals, microorganisms including bacteria and viruses, pesticides, herbicides, pharmaceuticals, fluoride, nitrates, and sediment.
An optional Stage 4 deionizing filter (Omnipure K5555) can be added after the membrane to further reduce total dissolved solids, delivering water that is a truly ‘blank slate’ which is a stable platform for creating a mineral profile to suit specific beers.
Please note: This system does not include a RO collector tank, so will only produce water at a speed the membrane is capable of, a maximum of 75 Gallons Per Day. That is approximately 280 Litres per day and requires good water pressure and filters in reasonable condition.
The amount of water collected will be less if your water pressure is very low, or if the filters/membrane are in poor condition. A container will need to be used to accumulate large volumes of water for brewing.
If you require a benchtop RO unit for drinking water, install an alkaliser/carbon filter after the membrane.
Produces ultra pure water ideal for use in beer and spirit making.
Connection Options
The kit comes with a 3/4″ Female to 1/4″ Tube connector. This will screw onto a standard 3/4″ male thread, commonly found in laundries and garden taps.
If you select the 1/2″ Female to 1/4″ Tube checkbox above, it will replace the 3/4″ fitting in the kit. 1/2″ Female fittings suit 1/2″ Male water lines commonly found in Australian kitchens and bathroom.
The 1/4″ diverter option is designed to screw onto standard mixer tap spouts with a 21mm male thread. If your tap has a 24mm female thread, the 899 adaptor will also be required. Take your aerator off the tap spout to discover which type of thread you have.
How Brewers use RO water
RO systems remove minerals, salts, and other impurities from your water, resulting in nearly pure water. This is a “blank slate” for brewing, a neutral starting point, free from compounds that can negatively affect the beer’s taste and aroma.
Brewers can then add minerals and salts to create profiles that suit the type of beer they are creating, including gypsum and calcium chloride
Using a reverse osmosis system makes it easier to control pH, setting it to a level which promotes enzymatic activity during the mash.
It also helps ensure consistency as the water used will be identical for each brew. There won’t be unknown contaminants making their way into your beer from the town water supply.
This stable basis makes it easier to continually adjust ingredients and achieve the results you are after.
How Distillers use RO water
Spiriti Makers use RO water in a similar way. It provides them with a neutral base free of unwanted taste/odour, minerals, chemicals contaminants that could cause undesirable effects in the final spirit.
Distillers can also add back specific minerals to enhance the spirit’s flavor and mouthfeel. This is a technique often used when making spiritis like whiskey.
RO water is also useful for diluting high proof spirits as it will not change the flavour of the spirit. Distillers can reach the desired bottling strength without altering the spirit in any significant way.
Purified water can also be used for cleaning brewmaking and distilling equipment.
